Tony Brown is a great talent that played all over Alabama’s defense last season and will be a solid pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Tony Brown plays with passion and has a tremendous amount of raw athletism. He has a knack for finding the football. Though listed as a defensive back, Alabama has lined him up more in the middle of the field at the linebacker level. His quick step and fast play recognition stand out on film and he makes up for his size when engaging with much larger blockers.
Brown will have no issue laying on the hard hit but will sometimes go for the kill opposed to tactfully wrapping up ball carriers. His scrappiness helped contribute to Alabama’s historically great run defense over the past two season but Brown shows flaws in coverage. His body position is subpar when he’s positioned in the middle of the field.
There’s no doubt that Brown will be a leader for this Crimson Tide defense in the 2017 college football season. As he continues to show passion, guts, and a physical mindset, he has had some off the field questions that he will have to answer when talking to scouts at the end of the year. He missed four games due to a suspension by the NCAA in 2016. It appears that Brown did something that jeopardized his amateur status.
Brown’s flaws will be covered up this season by the likes of Minkah Fitzpatrick, Anthony Averrett, and Ronnie Harrison but the unit as a whole will have a chance to be the best defensive backfield in the nation. They all should also be on an NFL roster for the 2018 season. The group will have their hands full this season with a conference that looks to be loaded at the quarterback position. This competition throughout the year should give draft analysts and scouts plenty to look at throughout the year.
