Pre-Combine 3 round Mock Draft

2018 NFL Mock Draft

This mock is based on the “If I’m the GM (of all of the teams).”  I’m (sadly) not tied into any front office nor following any teams mumblings too closely to actually know what they need thus, this is just what I would do.

Round 1:

Team Player Position Reason
CLE Sam Darnold QB Duh
NYG Josh Rosen QB Duh, again
BUF Baker Mayfield QB
IND trades back because they need a lot of players, not one. BUF trades up because they need a QB and have expendable capital. (1/21+1/22+2/24)
CLE Saquon Barkley RB
They have the OL to let Saquon succeed and this takes pressure off of Darnold
DEN Quenton Nelson OG
Assuming they sign Kirk, they decide to protect him, add another “win now” piece and improve the run game.
NYJ Josh Jackson CB
My CB1 to a team who needs a true lockdown corner. Yes, they do go defense again but, it’s the first defensive player selected, BUF took their QB
TB Bradley Chubb EDGE Duh
CHI Calvin Ridley WR
Give Mitch someone, anyone to throw to.
OAK Vita Vea NT
First, Vegas is lucky, they get the coin flip. My DT1. This pick depends solely on him running sub 5 at the combine, nonetheless, gives Khalil Mack a friend up front.
SF Roquan Smith LB
The pairing of Roquan and Rueben is absolutely filthy. The second coming of Willis and Bowman in SF. Although I don’t believe the NFL will take him this high, I would.
MIA Connor Williams LT
They do the same thing they did with Larmey Tunsil. Start him off inside and then move him outside the next or when they decide he’s ready. I think he could be a day 1 guy.
CIN Derwin James S
My S1, Teryl Austin is great at developing secondary players and Derwin is a perfect piece of clay to develop.
WAS Denzel Ward CB
Draft a CB to replace Fuller at the very basement but, ideally, take a job opposite Norman.
GB Harold Landry EDGE
They need edge help and resigning of Nick Perry doesn’t fix the problem. Landry is a versatile player who is essentially the anti-Clay Matthews, whose over the hill.
ARI Maurice Hurst 3T
This roster is riddled with holes. Sorry Fitz, you deserve better. This fixes the problem of starting Frostee Rucker.
BAL Orlando Brown OT
It’s pretty common to hear about Orlando moving to RT and he gets to do that opposite of Stanley.
LAC DaRon Payne DT
Mebane is over the hill, so replace him and have an elite front 4.
SEA Isaiah Wynn OG
I hear the crys of SEA fans that they need a guard not a tackle. They still need OL badly.
DAL Tremaine Edmunds LB
He’s going to kill the combine so this will be a bit of a steal. Replaces Anthony Hitchens and gives them the impact they thought Jaylon Smith could be.
DET Minkah Fitzpatrick Enigma
I’m still unsure what position he plays but, DET could use any of them. Nevin Lawson is bad, Quinn is aging, and a good slot with GB and MIN in division isn’t the worst thing. I’m sure he could play the Patrick Chung role from NE very well.
IND Mike McGlinchy OT
Luck being protected is priority 1.
IND Rashan Evans LB
Very pro ready linebacker who can start day 1
LAR Isaiah Oliver CB
Big, physical, athletic CB who can replace Trumaine Johnson if he leaves or mirror him on the other side of the field if he stays.
CAR Derrius Guice RB
Perfect thunder to McCaffrey’s lightning. Jon Stewart is only declining and Guice is a premeir 2 down pounder at the very least.
TEN Anthony Miller WR
TEN has a glaring weakness at pass catcher. They were among the worst set in the league at creating separation, receptions and YAC. Getting Davis Back in the playoffs proved to be a massive upgrade and with Miller added, I beleive this team makes the next step this season.
ATL Billy Price iOL
Levitre is old, Mack is aging, and the other guard spot is a weakness. Seal up the OL with a player who can play the entire iOL in the zone blocking scheme.
NO Taven Bryan DT
Sans Cam Jordan, there is essentially no pass rush from this front 4. This can be helped by letting Taven cause disruption
PIT Malik Jefferson LB
Allow Vince Williams to QB the defense and Malik Jefferson gets to just run around make plays to replace Shazier. I hope he makes a full recovery.
JAX Dallas Goedert TE
A luxury pick here really but, Mercedes Lewis has been on his last legs for a few years now.
MIN Braden Smith OL
He is big enough to play OT but, he seems to be more suited to be an OG. WIth Berger being old and Siriles and Isadora being replacement level players, he fills a need here.
NE Marcus Davenport EDGE
He’s athletic and has a nice bull rush. So far, that’s all I have to say positively about Davenport but, BB and crew will figure something out. He could become the next Chandler Jones.
PHI Mike Hughes CB
500 yards. In the Super Bowl. No.

Round 2:

Team Player Position Reason
CLE Ogbonnia Okoronkwo EDGE
He is billed as a pass an undersized pass rush specialist, which is an ideal rotational player with Emmanuel Ogbah, a run stuffing DE.
NYG Tyrell Crosby OT
Fits their spread-like offense and allows Flowers to move to the Right side, where he appears to be more natural. Protect Rosen/Eli
CLE Chukwuma Okorafor OT
Joe Thomas isn’t going to play forever and would be an IDEAL model for a “No-technique Tyronn Smith” to learn from.
IND Sam Hubbard EDGE
Another ready-made, high-floor defensive prospect to rush the edge, replacing Henry Anderson or Margus Hunt.
NYJ Lamar Jackson QB
NY hopes to find their future franchise QB. Jackson has all the tools and is athletic enough to dodge the impending pressure behind the currently questionable OL.
TB Jaire Alexander CB
Quick CB experienced in on and off-man coverage who is physical in run support and would be great opposite Hargreaves and replace Grimes. Just switch out of an off coverage system TB.
CHI Christian Kirk WR
If you don’t hit once, might as well shoot twice a la CAR w/ Lotulelei and Short a few years ago. They need multiple players at this position. Kirk in the slot, Ridley on the outside.
DEN Martinas Rankin OL BPA OL
MIA DeShonne Elliot S
Nate Allen isn’t a long-term solution at safety and Elliot is BPA S at this pick to play opposite of Reshad Jones
OAK Sony Michel RB
Gruden can’t help himself but to take a true weapon out of the backfield that’s similar to the RB he won his SB with, Warrick Dunn.
NE Leighton Vander Esch LB
I have him as Kyle Van Noy 2.0 at the next level and KVN’s contract expires next season. A safe player at a position of need.
WAS Josh Allen QB
Purely as a developmental prospect. This seems to be Alex Smith’s job now though, be the safe guy while a raw QB develops behind him.
GB Hayden Hurst TE
Aaron Rodgers deserves more talent around him. TE is currently the glaring hole for offensive talent but, I’m not sold on Jordy or Cobb long term.
CIN James Daniels iOL BPA OL
ARI Donte Jackson CB
Super athlete from LSU worked once, why not pair him with one of the best CBs of this generation. They haven’t had a talented CB across from Pat Pete in a long time.
LAC Jessie Bates III S
Tre Boston is a short-term fix that might be gone in FA and Jahleel Addae could definitely be improved upon. Desmond King looks to be their NB, not FS. Bates is a late riser and solid player.
NYJ Kolton Miller OT
They need to upgrade at the OL. Their quasi-spread offense helped mask this but, with their OC gone and a rookie QB at the helm, improve the trenches.
DAL Harrison Philips DT
A very productive DT who can fill a position of need as the run-stuffer.
DET Duke Ejiofor EDGE
Its currently up in the air whether Ansah returns and behind him their pass rush is suspect. Ejiofor is likely an early starter, possible Ansah replacement.
BAL DJ Moore WR
Steve Smith Sr. is the pro comp going around on him. Steve Smith Sr. was last on the Ravens. Ravens need a WR.
BUF Quenton Meeks CB
Another high floor/low ceiling CB who can play opposite of Tre White. With EJ Gaines future up in the air, this fills a probable need.
KC Frank Ragnow iOL
The Chiefs struggled down the stretch creating holes for Kareem Hunt. Ragnow is a fringe first rounder if he doesn’t go down this season in my opinion and this is a steal. He would play LG here.
IND Carlton Davis CB
Big, physical DB to handle AROB, Nuk, and Corey Davis 6 times a year at a clear position of need.
LAR Will Clapp iOL
Their OL is aging and, Whitworth aside, pretty pedestrian. He could be a day-1 starter to help Gurley have another MVP contention season.
CAR Justin Reid S
Carolina struggles at the safety position greatly. Mike Adams, Colin Jones, and Kurt Coleman are replaceable names. Reid could work in the Tampa 2 system
TEN Lorenzo Carter EDGE
Super athletic player who is unrefined. Seeing as they are likely to cut Orakpo, Morgan or both, EDGE is a pressing need.
ATL Tim Settle DT
Big DT to replace the likely-departing Dontari Poe.
SF Micheal Gallup WR
A WR who is solid at doing about everything you ask a WR to do and he could be at the very worst a co#1 with Pierre Garcon. Jimmy G needs more weapons.
PIT Armani Watts Deep S
Mike Mitchell isn’t the answer. While Watts is a slight reach, he fits a major need. Sean Davis doesn’t appear to be a deep S so, let him play in the box.
JAX Ronnie Harrison Box S
He could easily replace Barry Church to be the enforcer in the middle of the field.
MIN Alex Cappa OL
They don’t really have many holes to fill except the OL and I don’t know how they feel about the Ben Gedeon coming off of his rookie year to replace in the second round. Cappa is an OL I expect to start inside with potential to work his way back outside later in his career
CLE Tavarus McFadden CB
Basically Josh Jackson-lite in this draft, good ball skills, size and range downfield with serious run support questions. Cleveland needs CBs with Jamar Taylor being average and McCourty aging.

Round 3:

Team Player Position Reason
CLE Darius Leonard LB
Versatile sideline to sideline LB who is really a developmental guy. Could get work rotating with Shobert, Collins or Kirksey. Good fit as I believe Leonard’s best fit is to develop in a 4-3.
NYG Jerome Baker LB
NYG has had serious questions at LB for a few years now. Baker is certainly somewhat developmental but, he will get early work whether he likes it or not.
IND Kerryon Johnson RB
The last 3 picks have been defensive, very needed that they may be, here is some help Luck. Gore won’t live forever and Mack is a fine rotational back, which will work well with Kerryon.
HOU Jamarco Jones OT
He is a solid tackle and I expect him to start day 1 to replace Duane Brown’s trade and Chris Clark being at best a swing tackle.
TB Rashad Penny RB
My favorite RB of this draft. A workhorse back for a team that runs the ball early and often in a power scheme who also just released their previous starting RB. It’s that seamless of a fit.
SF Mason Cole OL
Played LT last year but, will play on the interior in the NFL. He can push for a starting job year 1 easily in Shanahan’s zone scheme.
DEN Ronald Jones II RB
Jamaal Charles is done and CJA could be on the outs while not being a great starter anyways. I still question the Jones hype but, RB6 off of the board is a fine spot for me.
NYJ Arden Key EDGE
First round talent+undraftable work ethic. Maybe he turns out and maybe he doesn’t. Maybe this fall makes him work harder? Who knows. The 3rd is a fine time to roll the dice on talent.
MIA Nick Chubb RB
The run on RBs continues. MIA gets a nice stable of backs with Speed (Drake), Receiving(Williams), and Power(Chubb). Ideal fit for Chubb whose ceiling is a two-down pounder.
SF Kevin Tolliver II CB
Another long, athletic, physical corner opposite Witherspoon.
OAK Derrick Nnadi NT
Replaces expiring contract Justin Ellis at NT
GB Courtland Sutton WR
I’m not sold on Jordy long-term and Sutton is an athletic mold of clay that can learn to be Rodgers favorite red-zone weapon.
CIN Brian O’Neil OT
Developmental tackle prospect who fits CIN’s mold of Athlete with questionable play strength (Team’s up with my pro comp: Jake Fisher as well as Cedric Ogbuehi.
KC Josey Jewel LB
Derrick Johnson isn’t going to play forever and Jewel could step in Day 1 and replace him.
ARI Jalyn Holmes EDGE
Solid all around DE who could be an instant starter at their hybrid DE position.
HOU Austin Corbett iOL BPA OL
DAL Sean Welsh iOL
BPA iOL. Replace the weak link Jonothan Cooper.
DET Nathan Sheppard DT
High potential prospect to pair with A’Shawn Robinson and help create some more pass rush.
BAL DaeSean Hamilton WR
Another WR because they need WR talent. Excellent separator who struggles with occasional focus drops but, if you can create separation, you can catch passes.
LAC MJ Stewart CB
Jason Verrett is often injured, Casey Hayward is on the last year of his deal and Desmond King appears to be playing the Tyrann Matheiu FS/NB role. Compound this with the team not minding smaller CBs and MJ is an easy pick. MJ from UNC sounds good, don’t lie.
CAR Mark Andrews TE
Some consider him a first round prospect and Greg Olsen can only play so long.
KC Uchena Nwosu LB
Very high effort player who is a versatile LB. Learn from Derrick Johnson.
LAR Marquis Haynes EDGE
An athletic EDGE who could push Connor Barwin or Robert Quinn.
CAR Dorrance Armstrong Jr. EDGE
Athletic EDGE on a team that lacks a real pass rushing threat from the outside
TEN Mark Walton RB
Ideal foil to pair with Derrick Henry as the “lightning” role
ATL Jordan Whitehead S
Solid all around safety that is taken to potentially start as their deep-third safety instead of Ricardo Allen.
NO DJ Chark WR
Replaces Cooks (trade) and Ted Ginn (aging) as a deep threat.
PIT Darrius Phillips CB
Very athletic corner who will start as a KR/PR and could move outside as Joe Haden continues to age
JAX Duke Dawson CB/NB
His floor is a high end nickel corner with potential to play outside but, is drafted to replace liekly departure Aaron Colvin
MIN Andrew Brown 3T
An ideal pass rushing 3T to provide depth in the absense of Shariff Floyd.
NE Chad Thomas EDGE
Athletic monster who can be versatile from 4-3 to 3-4. If Davenport doesn’t work out, Thomas probably will.
BUF John Kelly RB
Not a clone of Lesean McCoy in the least but, he fits the zone scheme and has great capabilites out of the backfield with some focus drops.
